Web App: Things I Wish I Knew
About: Website with resources for the families of cancer patients
Lila has dreamed of learning to code for a long time and we could not be more proud of her for taking the next step and joining Kode With Klossy. Lila is a super talented creative person but she sometimes found it hard to express herself. She thought coding could offer a different creative way to express herself and show that girls are just as capable as boys when it comes to coding, building things, and solving complex problems. Lila’s inspiration for her final project “Things I Wish I Knew” came from a personal experience and her desire to help others in similar situations. Lila lost her father who was also her best friend to cancer. “Finding out that your loved one has been diagnosed with cancer is hard. There are so many questions” explains Lila.
She and her teammates Chloe and Veronica put together an interactive website with resources that can help friends and family process emotions, find coping strategies and connect with help. All the “Things I WIsh I Knew” is a loving tribute and place where others going through similar situations can find comfort and kindness.
Chloe took lessons on how to build a mini game and she was in 4th grade. She learned the basics of computer programming and she is eager to learn more. She is especially interested inspiring other girls to not be afraid to do what they love. ‘In today’s society, many women are afraid and even discouraged from going into the field of computer science, and we need to change that. We should not think that women are not smart enough to enter the world of technology”.
Veronica is equally passionate about coding and the ideas of creating something that can change the world. She likens coding to a lego building; joining small pieces of lego pieces together to make a really awesome house! She hopes to be an inspiration to other girls to be curious about coding. “This is the way the world is going to be run and I want to help my friends and classmates code, together, ladies are going to rock the world!”
